Online Classrooms- Boon for Education or a Curse

 

Technology has changed a lot. And, along with that different aspects of life are also changing like education system, communication system, business managing techniques, etc. Here let’s talk about education scenario which is rapidly changing to a great extent. You must remember the saying of Winston Churchill, “There is nothing wrong with change, if it is in the right direction.” But, our education system is adopting the online classes’ method for spreading education. It is now becoming a trend which is entering colleges and universities of all over the globe.

As per the survey, sixty-five percent of education institutions accepted that online learning is very vital part of their long-term strategy. In fact, almost 6.1 million students were taking at least one online course during the year 2010. This was the report provided by “Going the Distance: Online Education in the United States, 2011.”Online classes are quiet amazing in terms of money as compared to those private schools which need huge cash-fusion to maintain their financial structure. Also, these online learning portals are useful for generating good revenues as well as proffer complete convenience to learners.

But, are these classes really helpful in terms of educating students? Don’t you think these classes are creating some sort of dehumanization by replacing classrooms with electronic portals?? The physical existence of a student is one of the most important aspects to make sure whether a student is paying attention or not. Online classes are just a sort of lecture without any interaction. You must hear several times that education should be interactive. It’s a two-way system. Habit of asking questions drives curiosity. Listening to online classes only provides knowledge but do not help in expanding thought process.

The energy with which the teacher teaches in the classroom cannot be directed into the computer screen. Also, you cannot ask for “Repeat” if something is not properly audible to you once. Moreover, transformation of classrooms into your laptop is lessening the traditional college experience as well as taking students away from reality. Already the world has become highly dependent on technology. Most of you use Skype, Apple’s FaceTime, texting, etc. to reduce your physical efforts. Therefore, converting classrooms into online portals may dilute the college brand and experience.

Well, after discussing both the positive and negative aspects of online classes’ it is not easy to support one. Students are demanding online classes for reducing effort of going to the class and for utilizing their leisure time. Now, it’s time to see that in what way these online portals modify the educational experience.
